Fotogalleriet har gleden av å invitere til åpningen av Marthe Thorshaugs utstilling Comancheria. Det er kunstnerens første separatutstilling i Norge. Utstillingen presenterer en serie fotografier og en kortfilm som utspiller seg i Comancheria, indianernes historiske rike i USA.
Filmen omhandler en gruppe unge Comanche indianere som forbereder et Sweat-lodge rituale. Dette fører oss ut på en rundreise i dagens Comancheria, hvor vi støter på en rekke karakterer underveis. En gjennomgangsfigur er The Chief, som fungerer som en historieforteller og veileder gjennom filmen. Alle filmens karakterer spilles av autentiske personer, og dagens leder for Comanche Nation, Wallace Coffey, figurerer som The Chief.
Comancheria benytter seg både av fiksjonsfilmen- og dokumentarfilmens virkemidler, og anvender lekent elementer fra blant annet western-filmer og roadmovies. Også i Thorshaugs tidligere filmer søker kunstneren å la de dokumentariske elementene forvirre og farliggjøre fiksjonen og vice versa. Ved å viske ut skillene mellom det fiktive og det reelle, trer nettopp forestillingen om et nytt Comencheria frem. Fotografiene, kalt Epilogue, representerer på sin side scener som ikke er med i filmen, men som antyder ulike retninger historien kan ta.
Comancheria viser oss et alternativ til det stigmatiserte og ufarliggjorte bilde av indianere i dagens USA, forbundet med store sosiale og økonomiske problemer. Vi får se at Comanche indianerne har reorganisert seg og er i ferd med å skape seg en ny kulturell og sosial identitet. Filmen gir en ulmende følelse av at indianeren er tilbake på krigsstien, og uttrykket ”The New Frontier” har allerede begynt å sirkulere. I sammenblandingen av ulike virkelighetsnivåer viser kunstneren også hvordan amerikansk historie i stor grad har blitt til i grenselandet mellom fakta, fiksjon, propaganda og myte.
Marthe Thorshaug (f. 1977) avsluttet sin utdannelse ved Statens Kunstakademi/Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo i 2003.

Fotogalleriet is proud to present the exhibition Comencheria by the Norwegian artist Marthe Thorshaug. This is the artists´ first solo exhibition in Norway. The exhibition presents a series of photographs and a film taking place in Comancheria, the historical land of the Indians in USA.
The film revolves around a group of young Comanches who is preparing for a sweat lodge ritual. This sets us out on a journey through contemporary Comancheria, encountering a series of characters, real and mythological, along the way. A main character is The Chief, who functions as a storyteller and guide throughout the film. All the characters are authentic, and the Chairman of Comanche Nation, Wallace Coffey, is playing the part of The Chief.
Comacheria employs both cinematic- and documentary means of expression, playing with elements from both Western- and roadmovies. As in Thorshaugs previous films, she is aiming for the documentary elements to confuse and complicate the fiction and vive versa. By blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, the appereance of a new Comancheria comes forth. The photographs, called Epilogue, represent scenes that are not in the film, but which hint at possible directions the story might take.
Comancheria gives us an alternative view of the stigmatized image of contemporary Indians, often connected with large social and economic problems. We get to experience a Comanceria that is reorganizing itself and is on the verge of creating a new cultural and social identity. The film awakens a growing sense of the indians being back on the war track, and the expression The New Frontier has already started to circulate. In the blurring of different levels of reality the artist shows how American history to a large extent has been created on the borderline between facts, fiction, propaganda and myth.
Marthe Thorshaug (b. 1977) finished her education at The Oslo National Art Academy in 2003.
